1. Macy's

Originally founded as Federated Department Stores in 1929, the company was officially renamed Macy's in 2007. With over 800 stores across the nation, Macy's is one of the largest retail companies in the United States. Macy's sales rose throughout 2010 and it already has announced plans to hire 3,500 employees in the next two years.

Headquartered in Overland Park, Kan., Sprint Nextel is one of the largest providers of mobile phone service in the United States. With over $32 billion in 2010 sales and roughly 40,000 employees, the company is a major player in the fields of wireless voice and mobile data.

Earlier this year, the company received some rave reviews in regards to its customer service. According to a national survey conducted by Vocalabs, over a yearlong period ending in 2010 the company improved its "very satisfied" rating by 10 percent. With fierce competition among wireless carriers, good customer service is an important factor in gaining market share.

It was recently announced that Sprint will join AT&T and Verizon Wireless as a carrier for Apple's popular iPhone 4 and new iPhone 4S.

3. EarthLink Business

EarthLink provides both dial-up and broadband services to medium and large-size businesses, as well as residential customers across the United States. The company employs over 1,800 workers and provides Internet service to more than 1.5 million customers.

EarthLink recently completed the first phase of a project to increase high-speed bandwidth across much of Tennessee. The project's three phases are being funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The new network will provide several institutions, including education and health-care providers with Internet service. Additionally, the network will allow smaller, regional ISPs to provide Internet service to its customers.

EarthLink recently acquired two telecom companies, One Communications and STS Telecom. Both of which will help it expand its market-reach across much of the eastern United States. These acquisitions are designed, in part, to allow EarthLink to provide consistent IP services to businesses with offices in multiple states.

5. Citi

With the world's largest financial services network, Citigroup Inc. spans 140 countries and employs roughly 260,000 worldwide. After suffering from massive losses during the financial crisis of 2008, the company fell from the esteemed title of "largest bank in the world by assets." They are, however, still one of the "big four" banks in the United States. By the end of 2010, Citigroup repaid in full the emergency government aid it had received.

As stock prices plunged recently, banks were at the forefront of the slide. Citigroup was a part of this fall, yet CEO Vikram Pandit claims that Citi is still secure and in good shape as a company.

Founded in 1930, Yellowbook shows no signs of slowing down -- even with the decline in printed media in recent years. Its claim to fame is being the top independent publisher of directories, both in print and online. They reach consumers both in print circulation and through its online presence.

Companies have had to innovate in this space to stay ahead. Yellowbook no longer publishes residential directory information in print, and has switched from a four-column to a smaller three-column layout. The company has enjoyed recent success in online advertising, with over 47 million unique visitors this past June.

Employee Review: "Senior management try hard to improve the products and workplace. Working your own territory is good. Having lots of different products allows you to enter most business to sell something they might need."*

9. Hewlett-Packard (HP)

Hewlett-Packard, headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., currently ranks 10th on the Fortune 500. The company ships around 48 million PCs each year, making it the largest supplier of PCs worldwide. Business Week named HP the 11th-most-valuable global brand in 2009. The company's logo has changed little since its creation, which goes a long way for long-term brand recognition.

Although there has been some concern regarding the recent earthquake in Japan affecting HP's production and sales, the company's revenue has continued to climb. With revenues of $126 billion in its 2010 fiscal year, the company is also the largest IT company in the world. HP currently operates in 170 countries worldwide and has over 300,000 employees.

The company launched its TouchPad tablet computer in July, intended to compete with Apple's iPad and the plethora of Android-based tablets also hitting the market. While initial response has been wanting, HP recently announced a price cut, in an attempt to establish the TouchPad brand as the value-leader in tablet computing.

Employee Review: "People are very easy to work with and want to do a good job. Never experienced a time in 10 years of working there where I could not find a person willing to explain things if I was stuck on something. There are a lot of brilliant people there who love to think and make things with a lot of different product lines to move around into. Movement within the company is not looked down upon, rather, most managers appreciate people with a lot of different perspectives.*"*

Top Job Categories:

10. Amazon

Amazon.com, incorporated in 1994, was originally based out of founder Jeff Bezos' garage. In the company's first month of business, it shipped orders to all 50 states as well as 45 countries. Amazon now employs 33,700 workers in 12 countries worldwide.

A leader in the e-book platform since the launch of its Kindle e-reader, the company has reached the point where its sales of Kindle books exceeds the number of hardcover books it sells.

Amazon has recently hired a new director of social media, John Yurcisin, to help the company redefine its social strategy. While Amazon pioneered the concept of e-commerce, it's lately fallen behind in both social networking and social media.

Employee Review: "The company has some of the best and brightest co-workers I've ever worked with. There are challenging problems to work on in every department, and management is rarely afraid to invest in bold new ideas."*
